Minimally Invasive Surgery Q & A
What is minimally invasive surgery?
Minimally invasive surgery — also called laparoscopic surgery — is a type of surgery that involves the use of small incisions and tiny surgical tools to perform procedures, compared to traditional surgeries with larger incisions and tools. Dr. Morrison specializes in laparoscopic surgeries and minimally invasive robotic procedures using the da Vinci® Surgical System.
Depending on what type of procedure is performed, Dr. Morrison makes sure you’re comfortable with local or general anesthesia before making the first incision. Most minimally-invasive surgeries involve incisions that are less than an inch, and generally no more than two inches in length.
The small incisions allow for the passage of the surgical tools into the surgery site along with a camera and lighting for visualization. Using the camera to examine the area, Dr. Morrison locates the site to perform the surgery and completes it gently and delicately using the proper tools.
When is minimally invasive surgery recommended?
Minimally invasive surgery may be a good option for you if you’re experiencing uterine fibroids, ovarian cysts, or endometriosis.
There are a variety of minimally invasive procedures available, including:
- Endometrial ablation
- Hysterectomy
- Permanent sterilization
- Removal of endometrial tissue implants
- Removal of uterine fibroids
- Management of ectopic pregnancies
Dr. Morrison works with you to determine if a minimally invasive surgery or another procedure is the best option for you.
What are the benefits of minimally invasive surgery?
Minimally invasive surgeries offer faster recovery times and less risk of infection than traditional open surgeries. Some types of minimally invasive surgeries can be performed in the office, and most are done as outpatient procedures, so you can go home the same day.
To be considered for minimally invasive surgery, Dr. Morrison considers your diagnosis, medical history, and lifestyle to determine if it’s the right choice for you. He provides alternative treatment options depending on your needs, especially if you want to become pregnant and prefer fertility-sparing procedures or therapies.
How long does recovery take after minimally invasive surgery?
Recovery typically takes 1-2 weeks after many minimally invasive procedures. Some procedures, like hysterectomies, require a short hospital stay to reduce your risk of complications. Dr. Morrison explains what to expect during recovery and provides prescriptions and at-home instructions to manage any discomfort you may experience.
